A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian works. They were built at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
