The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
