WHO Raises Warning Over Critical Shortage of Obesity Injections

Less than 10% of individuals eligible to benefit from obesity jabs including Wegovy can access them, warns the WHO as it releases its initial advice on the therapies.

Given more than one billion individuals worldwide now living with obesity, it is calling for more widespread and fairer availability to GLP-1 medication.

Per forecasts, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our latest guidance acknowledges that obesity is a chronic disease that can be addressed with holistic and ongoing care," said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are key barriers to universal access to the injections that can help people shift substantial weight, notes the body.

Skinny Jab Supply Crisis

Despite the present most optimistic scenario, the manufacturing of these medications could only cover about 100 million people – less than 10% of those who need them, per the health organization.

The recommendation urges countries and companies to expand access, by approaches including voluntary licensing.

A patent on the active ingredient – the primary component of a leading brand – is due to expire in several nations in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Jabs Function

These medications mimick a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, reduce hunger and boost satiety so people reduce food intake.

Individuals usually begin shedding pounds after several weeks of commencing the weekly injections.

Studies indicates people may regain a significant portion after a year of halting the treatment, when their usual appetite return.

Being overweight or obese raises your chance for experiencing diseases, like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and specific malignancies.

Obesity impacts individuals in every country and was associated with over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
